This weekend epitomizes the sprawling state of cinema in 2017 as seven—SEVEN—new films are opening in and around #Buffalo. Four are wide releases so there's a good chance that movie you were waiting on the past three weeks is officially gone. Now which is worth seeing?
To me the choice is easy: Only The Brave Movie. It's the one I picked to see last night and it delivered by giving an honest depiction of true life heroes without the usual overly glorified Hollywood antics. These characters are allowed depth in order for us to feel the tragedy as more than mere news headline. See it at AMC Theatres, Regal Cinemas & Flix Stadium 10.
The other wide releases are love-him-or-hate-him Tyler Perry (Boo 2! A Madea Halloween), another environmental disaster flick (Geostorm), and a thriller that its own director says makes no sense because they didn't have the money to shoot the whole script (The Snowman).
If you still have time after showing your support for our resurgence as a Hollywood destination, head over to Dipson Theatres Amherst for what is my favorite new release this week: Professor Marston & The Wonder Women. This gem goes well beyond simply depicting the origins of Wonder Woman. It's a sex-positive true story from an era where sexuality was anything but. Rebecca Hall delivers an Oscar-worthy performance.
